What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth composed of pure titanium. The implant is placed into the jaw and functions like your natural teeth. They look and feel exactly like your own. The implant is made up of a few parts including the implant itself, an abutment and a crown. The human body bonds with the metal through a process known as osseointegration during healing. Dental implants can be a single implant or an entire upper/lower set. This will depend on the severity of the patients tooth loss, as every mouth is different. Patients have to be good candidates for dental implants. If a patient has existing gum damage, adjustments may need to be made. However, most patients are able to receive dental implants without issue.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

  • With a dental implant, you regain your ability to chew and eat anything easily. Many people struggle with eating due to tooth loss.
  • You are able to smile with ultimate confidence, thus boosting your self-esteem. No more feeling self-conscious or embarrassed about your smile.
  • Restore a youthful appearance to your face and facial structure.
  • Dental implants prevent jaw bone deterioration which occurs with tooth loss. Bone loss and gum recession are prevented as well. Both of these ailments are associated with conventional dentures and bridges.
  • You can restore your smile back to normal without the need for a conventional bridge.
  • You no longer have to deal with putting dentures in and out. You save time, hassle and money associated with non-permanent artificial teeth.
  • Dental implants have a 97% success rate in clinical studies over the lifetime of a patient. Implants are extremely reliable and ideal for many.
  • Feel confident to speak, eat and function in your daily life without giving your teeth a second thought.

What Does The Procedure Involve?

Dental implant surgery is always done in a sterile and safe environment. Along with our trained periodontist, we will have all other medical professionals and specialists needed to complete your procedure present. There are two options for dental implant surgery. The first is a one-step process. With a one-step process, the healing collar (abutment) is placed at the time of initial surgery. With a two-step process, the abutment is placed once the implants have bonded to the jawbone.

The healing time for the initial surgery can differ based upon the individual. Some factors to take into consideration are bone graft, gum grafts, and jaw bone hardness. During the first three to six months post-operation, the implant will gradually bond with your jawbone.

A dental crown or single prosthesis is used for the replacement of a missing tooth. A fixed prosthesis is a permanently attached bridge that is supported by implants. This option can be used to replace many teeth. A complete dental prosthesis replaces all teeth in the upper or lower jaw bone. All of these options are discussed with our periodontist. They will evaluate your teeth and jawbone. Each patients mouth is unique and therefore the best method of implant will vary from person to person.

To discuss which option is best for you, please contact our office and one of our team members will be glad to schedule an evaluation. You will receive care from the best periodontist in Kelowna with expertise and ample experience. We are committed to helping you choose the right path for your smile. Am I a Good Candidate

The ideal candidate for dental implant surgery is a patient with good oral and general health. This means you should have healthy gums. There needs to be enough jawbone to support an implant. Even in patients that do not have substantial jaw bone left, regenerative technology can provide the foundation needed for support. In other words, even if you arent a perfect candidate there are options.
